Working on Australia's frontline significantly increases a person’s risk of mental illness and relationship breakdown. The heroic men and women working as Australia’s frontline personnel across Defence and Emergency Services take this risk every day.
Westpac Scholar, Sarah Yates experienced the toll PTSD can take on spouses and families, when her husband, a WA Police Detective, was diagnosed in 2008. “Our marriage has been defined by his illness and the challenges that are associated with loving someone with a disease that changes every part of who they are.”
Realising the lack of services, Sarah was moved to create Alongside, with co-founder Paige Hobbs. Alongside provides proactive education, support, PTSD services and a strong sense of community for partners and families of Australia's Defence and mergency Services, from recruitment through to discharge from service and beyond.
Today, her non-for-profit runs across four states and is continuing to change lives for the better in the Defence and Emergency Services community.
